John Garn – Founder & Executive Director
john_200x250px.jpgJohn Garn is a specialist in whole system approaches to environmental protection and sustainable development.  John has more than 15-years experience working with both public and private organizations on regulatory redesign, Green Business Program development, sustainable agriculture, and the development of environmental certification systems.

John is the developer of the nation’s first Green Business Program, launched in Sonoma County in 1993.  This program, the Sonoma Green Business Program, won a national sustainability award in 1999 and was expanded under John’s guidance to become the Bay Area Green Business Program.  The Bay Area Green Business Program has now been in operation for over 10-years, in all nine Bay Area counties, and has certified over 1000 businesses.  It has been replicated in several other California counties, and has also been used as a model both nationally and internationally.

John came across Jan Hanhart’s “Eco-Feedback” thesis while visiting Sweden in 1992. This was when he first started developing the concept of Community Pulse. Since 2006 he has been working with Anna Brittain to make the concept a reality throughout the Bay Area and California.
